Itinerary:Named in honour of Queen Adelaide, the city was founded in 1836. Colonel William Light, one of Adelaide's founding fathers, designed the city and chose its location close to the River Torrens in the area originally inhabited by aborigines of the Kaurna tribe. Light's design set out Adelaide in a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares, and entirely surrounded by parkland.
Today, Adelaide is noted for its many festivals and sporting events, its food, wine and culture, its long beachfronts, and its large defence and manufacturing sectors. It continues to rank in the Top 10 on the World's Most Livable Cities index.

DAY 1: Wednesday 8 September— travelling to Auckland
We are transferred to Wellington airport this morning, where we meet to check in for our mid afternoon flight to Auckland. We stay overnight in Auckland tonight, in preparation for an early departure for Adelaide tomorrow morning, dining in at our airport based hotel
this evening.
DAY 2: Thursday 9 September— Arrive Adelaide
An early rise this morning, we enjoy a light breakfast at the hotel before being transferred to Auckland airport where we check in for our flight to Adelaide departing at 8.00am. Our scheduled arrival into Adelaide is 10.25am. After clearing Customs and Immigration we are met at the airport by our local Coach Captain and transferred to our hotel, home for the next three night’s. The afternoon is free for you to rest and relax, or to embark on your own tentative explorations making use of Adelaide’s free inner city tram. We dine in this evening.
DAY 3: Friday 10 September— Adelaide
After a hearty breakfast this morning, we will embark on a sight seeing tour of Adelaide with a local guide. First stop is where it all started - Montifiore Hill from where Colonel Light planned a great city of the future in the sweeping valley below. Nearby is one of Adelaide most prominent landmarks - St Peters Cathedral, which overlooks the city from North Adelaide. We have arranged an inspection of the fascinating stained glass within the Cathedral. It ranges from Victorian to modern times and includes recent windows by South Australian Glass artist, Cedar Prest. In the Parklands, just below the Cathedral, is one of the most beautiful Cricket Ovals in the world. Our local guide will show us first hand the facilities at Adelaide Oval including the modern Bradman Stand and the National Trust Listed Score Board well over 100 years old. We farewell our guide then make our way to one of Adelaide’s biggest icons - Haighs Chocolates. Just on the edge of the city, it produces a wonderful range of hand made chocolates, and we will be shown the process and have the chance to sample the product. This afternoon we have free time to explore the city and Rundle Mall – Adelaide’s shopping precinct and where we can purchase some lunch. From there, we are able to walk the short distance back to our hotel to freshen up before dinner, dining in again this evening.
DAY 4: Saturday 11 September— Barossa Valley
Our touring today takes us to the Barossa Valley. The Vineyards here were established within a few years of modern South Australia’s founding in 1836. German and English settlers began planting grapes and now, more than 150 vintage years later, the wines are world famous. Our first stop of the day is at the Seppeltsfield Winery - one of the world’s most famous wineries. We will embark on a tour of the gardens, grounds and heritage buildings, including a tasting! From here we visit a new vineyard called Kabminye Wines. Set in a stunning modern, architecturally designed building, this family run winery/café and art gallery offers a delightful Barossa Valley experience. The winery uses rare and quintessential Barossa varieties including Mataro, Grenache, Frontignac, Cinsault and of course Shiraz, sourced from some of the oldest vines in the valley. With exceptional views of the Barossa Ranges this is the perfect place to enjoy a tasting of premium Barossa Valley wines. We will enjoy lunch (included) before continuing onto Menglers Hill Lookout for some good views over the Barossa. On our way back to Adelaide we call into Angas Park Fruits for the opportunity to buy some of their delicious, chocolate covered dried fruit. It will be an enjoyable day with the opportunity to sample some of the local produce After a busy day out and about, we dine in again this evening.
DAY 5: Sunday 12 September— Victor Harbor & Kangaroo Island
This morning we depart Adelaide and travel south to Victor Harbour, or “Victor”, as the locals call it. Originally it was a whaling centre with three whaling stations in the mid 1900s with an estimated 400 southern right whales arriving in Encounter Bay each season. Unfortunately these magnificent mammals where destroyed and it is only in the last 15 years they have returned to the area in increasing numbers. Late morning, we board the horse drawn tram for a unique ride across the causeway to Granite Island. Granite Island was once used as the main port for vessels travelling overseas with cargo which was brought to the Port of Goolwa and then transferred overland to Victor Harbour by horse drawn vehicles. Nowadays Granite Island is a Nature Reserve with a thriving population of Little Penguins which come in on dusk. On the island we enjoy a light lunch at On The Rocks Bistro (included) and then have time to walk our lunch off with a stroll along one of the many tracks. This afternoon we will reboard the coach for our transfer to Cape Jervis, the departure point for the SeaLink Ferry, a 40 minute journey across Backstairs Passage into Penneshaw. Upon arrival we head to American River to check into our base for the next two nights. The village is nestled on the hillside in native bushland, offering superb views of Eastern Cove and the mainland. The bushland surrounding the village is habitat to the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo, which are often seen in the area. Dinner tonight is at our hotel on the island.
DAY 6: Monday 13 September— Kangaroo Island
There are two major wildlife areas we have planned to visit today – Seal Bay and the Flinders Chase National Park. Our locally based guide will join us as we travel to the famous Seal Bay for a chance to walk on the beach amongst the colony of Australian Sea Lions who live here all year round. It is an unforgettable experience to be guided by a National Parks Ranger, along the beach, within metres of the bulls, cows and sea pups as they rest on the beach. We then head towards the south western end of Kangaroo Island via Koala Alley where, hopefully, we can spot one or two. We also have a stop for lunch (supplied) before entering the Flinders Chase National Park. We’ll visit Remarkable Rocks, Cape du Couedic and Admirals Arch where, via a spectacular board walk, we can see close up a colony of New Zealand Fur Seals who live in the sea and the rocks just below us. At Rocky River we should see plenty of Cape Barren Geese and maybe a Tamar Wallaby or two. Returning to our hotel, we have time to freshen up before dining in this evening.
DAY 7: Tuesday 14 September— Kangaroo Island To Hahndorf
After breakfast we catch the morning ferry back to Cape Jervis. We travel north, through the Adelaide Hills and into Hahndorf in time for a late lunch (own cost). Hahndorf is Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement and is a superb ‘flashback’ to the nineteenth century with its shops, eating houses and attractions housed in authentic surroundings. We will have some time to wander the main street through the interesting shops before checking into our overnight accommodation. We dine out this evening at a local Hahndorf Restaurant.
DAY 8: Wednesday 15 September— Hahndorf To Mannum
This morning we’ll have a guided tour of “The Cedars”, the home built by world renowned artist Hans Heysen. Hans settled in Hahndorf in 1908 and built his studio in the style of a Bavarian Chalet. This was his base as he painted extensively on site in the hills around Hahndorf and in the Flinders Ranges. From here we continue towards Mannum, taking the South Eastern Freeway through Murray Bridge, for our luncheon cruise. We join our vessel to be taken on a journey along the mighty River Murray. There is no better way to see the Murray than on a cruise whilst enjoying a sumptuous lunch. We return to Adelaide via Birdwood dining in tonight.
DAY 9: Thursday 16 September— Adelaide
Following breakfast we will enjoy a free day in Adelaide for personal sightseeing, shopping or just relaxing. Tonight we will meet up for dinner in our hotel to share our day’s experiences and our final night on tour together.
DAY 10: Friday 17 September— Adelaide To New Zealand
Unfortunately our tour has to come to an end and having had a
wonderful break in South Australia, this morning we make our way out to Adelaide Airport where we complete our formalities in time for a late morning flight back to Auckland. Arriving into Auckland early evening, we then transfer to Domestic for our connecting flight back to Wellington, from where, after farewelling our fellow travellers, we will be transferred back to our home towns.
